Make-up Advice?

Here is my dilemma. I have pretty much been wearing the same make-up shades and styles for the past 8-10 years and I want to update my look, I went to the store to purchase some lipstick and I was lost on what shade would actually look good on my lips. Everything I looked at seemed too dark, too light, too pink, too purple, just not the right color. It would probably help to know what I was looking for and that is the problem, I don't know what colors to choose. Eye shadow is the same story I don't really know what colors look best. I have heard about using different shades on the eyelid, crease, outer eye etc, but I am not really sure how to do it. Plus, I don't want to spend more then five minutes at the beginning of the day putting on make-up. So my question to you is; where do I find the info I need? Do Mary Kay representatives know colors or do they just sell the product? If I went to a department store make-up counter could they help me find the right stuff or do they just sell the make-up? Are there any good websites with tips? Or do you have any advice? Hopefully I can figure this out and find the right colors!

Hi Michelle, I applaud your intention to put make-up on every day. I am lucky to get my hair done most days let alone make-up. My mom used to take me to the clinique counter once in a while and they will do your facial and different shades while you are there. Their stuff is expensive so you just tell them you need to take the list home and think about it, then you go buy similiar shades from somewhere cheaper (kinda rude i know).

The last time I did this they put all of the shades on a paper drawing of a face so you can take it with you. It was always really fun, you just need to find a friend and leave the kids with the husbands and enjoy an afternoon at the make-up counter.

I have been feeling the same way. A make up counter will know how to give you colors and show you some tips. I love clinque make up, but since going back to school i have not bought it. Let me know what you find. I need a new look (and a hair cut!)

I was going to say the exact same thing Saralyn said. That is the way I do it. It works every time.

I have done the same, Clinique is good, but you could also try Mac - their stuff is really good and lasts a long time, but is kind of expensive. The problem I had with the makeup counter is that I went with no makeup and left with the same shades on my eyes, cheeks, and lips as I already use!! Oh well, they know what looks best.

You look fabulous already. If you keep improving, you're going to make the rest of us look bad. I like your new blog background...it's easier to read!

Seriously, when you came to visit me the other day I thought, "Hmmm, Michelle always looks so nice and put together."

But I know what you mean-- I've had the same make-up shades/style since high school too... Sometimes a change can be refreshing.

I've never done the makeup counter thing-- let's try it together! Ya know, with all our free time away from the babies and such. ;)

I agree with Saralyn. Treat yourself to a free make over, maybe buy one really great item you like from their counter and get the rest somewhere cheaper! Have fun!

I wish I could give good make-up advice, but I'm totally clueless when it comes to that stuff. Let me know what you figure out...I need help!

I love the pictures of David's "big hugs" that's so cute!

I hope things are going well for you guys...you're on the home stretch now! Exciting! We should try to get togther before you take off and head west.

I think it is a rut we get in where we ae comfortable in what we have always worn. If you find something great in the make-up world let me know. I could also use to be spruced up a bit.

My favorite is the store Sephora, and I seem to remember there was one opening in Briarwood when we left. I have had much better customer service there than at Clinique and they have lots of different brands at their disposal--it's the same idea as a Clinique or Mac counter, they do all of your makeup and give advice, but they aren't just selling one brand of product. I really like the brands Smash and Nars, both of which were introduced to me at Sephora. You can occasionally find GREAT deals on Smash products at Costco--just keep your eyes open. Also, if you need brushes or stuff like that, it will be (slightly) more affordable at Sephora but you'll get great quality. It's fun to see how you guys are doing, by the way!

Hey, Tracey K. sells Mary Kay, you should give her a call! Maybe she has some fabulous book that says what colors look great on everyone. Other than that, I'm not much help at all - it's a miracle if I even put on mascara!

i went to a mary kay party the other day and it was a skin care one, but i know they were going to do a color one next (tell you what colors are good on you), so there you go.

Everyone has said it. Mary Kay will do a makeover and many make-up counters too. I think you're beautiful just the way you are. I LOVE the photos of the "hugs".
